“While we previously
offered REI brand clothing that contained environmentally sensitive fibers, we
are moving from a grassroots approach to a formalised commitment to
environmental performance in our products,” said Lee Fromson, vice president of
REI Gear & Apparel. “Many of our customers recognize that their purchase
decisions have a direct impact on the natural world, and we are committed to
offering alternatives that are more environmentally friendly.”
Fibres that are part of REI’s eco-sensitive products include organic cotton,
bamboo, hemp, organic wool, post-industrial recycled polyester, recycled
polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic and polylactic acid (PLA), a polymer
derived from starch-rich products such as corn.
Additionally, REI is collaborating with more than 40 highly regarded outdoor
brands, supply chain partners and other stakeholders in an industry-wide
initiative to establish clear and consistent information about ‘eco-friendly’
and ‘green’ products. Through the Outdoor Industry Association‘s (OIA)
Eco-Working Group, the co-op is partnering with others to develop a common
framework to measure, report and ultimately improve on the environmental impact
of outdoor gear and clothing.

Eco-smart boutique to be fashion friendly Sustainable clothing not always bland

Eco-smart fashion can be hard to find, but a new boutique in the West Loop will put environmentally friendly fabrics at shoppers' fingertips.
Pivot boutique is opening at 1101 W. Fulton Market in September, showing fashion lovers that eco-friendly clothing does not have to be bland and lack variety, said the shop's owner Jessa Brinkmeyer, a former fashion journalist.
"These designers are creating very inspired designs and look no different from clothing you would find at any other boutique in the city," she said.
The shop will focus primarily on the materials being used to create the clothing, many of which will be made from organic cotton, bamboo, soy and recycled materials.
While Brinkmeyer says it is much easier to find eco-smart fashion on the Internet, many people want to actually touch the fabrics before they are sold on them.
"If you put these out there in front of people, they can see how great a lot of these fabrics feel against your skin," she said.
Pivot will feature more than 25 designers, including Linda Loudermilk and Ciel, and Brinkmeyer said she is also looking to include some local designers.
Brinkmeyer said many people often associate eco-friendly fashion with being boring or athletic, but her store will offer a variety of primarily women's casual contemporary apparel, as well as a small men's collection of denim and basic T-shirts.
"I want people to walk away knowing that they can find style, variety and personality if they're choosing fashion that is eco smart," she said. "I want them to be in love with the fashion, and also in love with the fact that it is eco smart."
The boutique will also have some small home accessories. Brinkmeyer said the items will have a wide price range, with the lower end at about $45-$50 and the average price point being about $140.
"It's not easy to find something that combines fashion and living a more sustainable life," she said.
The interior of Pivot also includes eco-friendly elements, such as compact fluorescent light bulbs, and the furniture is being created by a local artist using recycled wood and steel.
Brinkmeyer said she will be donating to and working with Growing Home, a Chicago-based non-profit that provides homeless and low-income people with job training on organic farms.
